There was a stately flight of stairs, all carved with an expert hand from dark, glossy wood. Affixed to each step was a piece of plush red carpet, but it was in dire need of vacuuming, as though the house had been empty for a few days. On the bottom step perched a six-year-old boy, his legs folded up against his thin chest and his small chin resting on his knees as he gazed in vacant sorrow at a dead spider in front of him on the carpet. Somebody had stepped on it by mistake, and he felt very sorry for the poor creature. The boy was pale and had the slightly gaunt look of someone who had been worrying and
